Resources / Illustrative field note

Follow the material, find the question

A simple flow map can reveal where the evidence needs to improve.

Choose a useful boundary

Begin with one process that a team can explain. Identify inputs, useful outputs, stock changes and losses using consistent units and periods.

Do not hide the unexplained difference

A gap between input and output can reflect measurement issues, stock changes or real losses. Treat it as a question to investigate rather than forcing the figures to balance.

Connect the map to responsibilities

Someone needs to own the source records and explain changes. A clear handover between operations, purchasing and environmental teams is often as useful as a more elaborate chart.

Evaluate options in context

Preventing waste, reusing material and recovering value have different implications. Consider quality, safety, environmental effects and practical constraints when choosing an action.
